RESTORATION OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS – LUTHIERS’ WORKSHOP IN COMO

The restoration of musical instruments is carried out in the laboratory. All those adjustments necessary to make the musical instrument 100% performing are carried out with precision: string change, truss rod, action and octave adjustment, pick up adjustment and accurate control of the electronics.

Less routine but equally important work is also carried out, such as rectifying keys when they are worn out and replacing them if necessary; restoring the correct radius of the keypad; improving the nut; maintaining and/or replacing the mechanics; replacing pickups.

Also repaired are those damages that often, unfortunately, happen to the instruments: broken pallets, broken mechanics, etc. .

Examples of repairs and maintenance performed on musical instruments

Restoration guitar Ibanez – model 335

1. Damage assessment

Guitar arrived in the laboratory with serious structural damage: following a collision, the block (skirting) that holds the neck had separated from its seat inside the body, remaining attached only to the lower part.

2. Start of the intervention

To be able to intervene, it was necessary to separate the top from the rest of the body and thus access the damaged baseboard.

3. Manufacturing

With the help of various clamps, the baseboard, cleaned of old glue residues, has been re-glued in its original position.

4. Finished work

The top has been re-glued to the body, restoring the previously removed binding. All parts were reassembled and the final setup made, so the guitar was returned to the happy owner.

Restoration electric Fretless – model Les Paul

1. Damage assessment

Very old Gibson electric bass guitar found in the attic: battered, dirty, and with missing or trimmed parts.

2. Start of the intervention

Many small repairs and/or replacements were necessary: a new nut, new key markers and the application of a new pickguard to support the potentiometers.

3. Manufacturing

With the help of various clamps, the baseboard, cleaned of old glue residues, has been re-glued in its original position.

4. Finished work

The bass was then repainted and the parts, old (but cleaned up) and new, were reassembled, the bass tuned, set, and returned to the owner.

Restoration indian sitàr

1. Damage assessment

An unusual instrument in Italy, this sitàr, after a fall, had its sound box, a pumpkin, shattered. Fortunately, the pieces, almost all of them, were still there.

2. Start of the intervention

I created an internal reinforcement of support, with cloth and glue, to be able to restore structure and glued the fragments, keeping them in place with tape and elastic.

3. Manufacturing

Where the pieces did not fit perfectly, at the junctions between the pieces or where the small fragments were missing, I putted with coachbuilder’s putty and sanded to restore uniformity to the structure.
